High School Rant

The title of the post may be a bit misleading because the rant isn't really about high school but rather people's perception of my high school. For the purposes of this post I will use the following abbreviations: CP = high school I attended and NG/LL = high school of girl in my rant.

A local magazine came out with an article today which showed different stats of area high schools and CP did pretty well and I was proud. People in the area always think CP isn't a good school but I think it is. Sure it's a little on the older side and doesn't have modern buildings but it is always what's on the inside that counts, right? The school is big. According to the article is currently has 2,034 students. I don't think we had that many kids there when I went but probably around 1600-1700. A lot of my classmates when to excellent colleges and universities and kids who graduated after me went to even better ones (i.e. Harvard).

Here comes the rant part. This girl I met at an alumni meeting for my college was talking to me and telling me about her 3 year old. She told me she wants to move because if she doesn't her daughter will go to CP. First of all, your daughter is 3 how do you know what CP or any other school will be like in 10 years when she actually starts high school? This girl went to NG or LL, I can't remember, but they are pretty much the same school. I got into the same college as you did but went to CP. She graduated college before I even started so it means the admissions rates probably were lower. So how can she tell me that CP is not a good school.

Of course there are some teachers that aren't the best. But there are some that are great. I feel you get what you put in. I wanted to tell this girl what I truly felt but didn't because I didn't want to seem rude even though I felt she was. I understand people are always entitled to their own opinions but I think this girl could be a little bit less judgemental in her situation.

I'm glad I got that off my chest. It has been bugging me for a while. This actually happened months ago. Thanks for listening!

My High School gets a bad rep, because kids from the town next to mine (a more low income town) also go to my school. But in general, it isn't even about the high school whether it is a blue ribbon school or the worst school in the county. What matters is what you make of it. There are kids in school in ghettos who work hard and get into Ivy league schools. And there are kids who go to top tier private schools who graduate and do nothing with themselves. Don't let the ridiculous things people say get to you, let it roll off your shoulders. Because at the end of the day, YOU make your future... And end up being the bigger person.

The "town" (it's not actually a town but a suburb of a big city) built a new high school (where I WOULD have gone) a few years after I graduated and my high school is pretty ghetto-fab now. I can admit it but I also know it isn't the same as when I was there.

I actually liked Last Night at Chateau Marmont. I wasn't sure how it was going to end but pretty please at how it did. I've been in a chick-lit easy-to-read mood lately and it was just that! What did you think of it?
